CANTON – The Stark County Home & Garden Show kicked off Friday at the Stark County Fairgrounds with sold out vendor space.

The show runs through Sunday, admission is $4 and parking at the county fairgrounds is free.

Building Industry Association of Stark and Central Ohio Vice President Joe Race is more than excited for this year’s show.

“The Home and Garden Show is back in a very strong and vigorous way,” Race said.

One thing different this year, he said, is his organization is working to help develop young kids in the trades and construction programs.

“We decided to raffle off tickets for a chance to win a she-shed, and all the proceeds are going towards our ‘Build My Future Committee,’ which is a committee to help develop our interaction with kids and young adults who want to learn about construction and the trades.”

The raffle tickets are $1. The winner will have the shed delivered to their residence. There are also lawn chairs and other items up for grabs.

Bouncing back after COVID-19

Miller has one of three landscapes on display at the show. He specializes in timber-framed pergolas, patios, retaining walls and landscaping.

“The last two years, because of COVID, we’ve had trouble getting in stone supplies, pavers and bricks. It’s been a tough getting the product in, but last summer was a little better… and we’re hoping this summer gets back to normal,” Miller said.

Stark County homeowners looking for inspiration and upgrades

Navarre residents Jean and Steve Cross were out for “a good time” Friday afternoon.

Jean Cross said they were exploring a walk-in shower because of a knee replacement surgery in April. Getting in and out the tub has been tough, they said.

“We’re looking for the walk-in showers and whatever else strikes our fancy. You never know unless it’s out there in front of you,” Steve Cross said.

BIA President Holly Waldenmyer said the organization just had its national show in Orlando, Florida, with many new products.

Waldenmyer noted roofing with integrated solar panels and electric vehicle charging stations among the items that can be discussed while visiting the show.

“Younger people are buying more homes and we want them to think about all the displays and the products we can offer and how they can use them in their life,” Waldenmyer said.

The BIA has created a new committee targeting youth and young adults with interests in trade careers and construction.

New theme in 2023

The BIA says next year, the show will incorporate local artists, and change the show’s name to the Stark County Home & Garten Show, a new spelling to emphasize the art element.

“It’s going to fabulous,” said Race, who added they’re launching this new vision at next month’s show in Tuscarawas County, set for April 29 to May 1 at the Tuscarawas County Fairgrounds.

Next year will be a combination of home, landscaping, and art with local artists displaying and selling their wares, Race said.

The 2022 Stark County Home & Garden Show is sponsored by Bob & Pete’s Floors, Canton Aluminum, ChoreChaser, Henderson Roofing & Construction, Home Appliance Company, Ohio State Waterproofing, Shanklin Heating & Air Conditioning, ShelfGenie, Stumpy’s Tree Service, The Commercial & Savings Bank, and Universal Windows.
